USMA MA289: Mathematics of AI

Security, Ethics & Generative Models

Overview

This section considers security, ethical, and reproducibility concerns that arise when machine-learning models are developed and evaluated.

These issues become especially important in open competitions, where external information, public notebooks, repeated submissions, and leaderboard feedback can create opportunities for accidental leakage or misleading evaluation.

Primary Concerns

Kaggle Competition 4: Open Final Competition

Launch: 24 Nov 2026

Due: 08 Dec 2026 NLT 2359

The final competition is deliberately more open than the first three. Cadets must design the modeling pipeline, select methods, justify validation procedures, and determine where additional complexity is useful.

The objective is an end-to-end demonstration of the semester's process: understand the data, establish a baseline, validate locally, engineer features when justified, compare model families, tune carefully, submit predictions, and communicate the result.

See the Kaggle Competition Page for competition requirements, due dates, and submission guidance.
